A Gold Vinyl Pull, A Hawkeye Dream: Inside the Sale of the Caitlin Clark 1/1

Some cards hit different. For Derrick Tracy, known in the hobby as Daddo Stacks, one pull in particular became more than a chase. It became a memory sealed in gold vinyl.

Today, Derrick is auctioning off one of the most coveted cards in the hobby: the 2024 Panini Prizm WNBA Caitlin Clark Gold Vinyl 1/1 rookie, graded PSA 9. And behind that listing is a father-son story that runs deep - from Iowa roots to those thrilling rips.

“That one was the card of all cards.”

Derrick, a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye born at the University of Iowa Hospital, is no stranger to basketball, or collecting. As a kid, he held onto his 1994 Upper Deck World Cup cards. Years later, the post-COVID hobby boom pulled him back in, this time with his son, Stavi.

What started with ripping packs turned into full-on prospecting. Soccer, baseball, and of course, PC-ing their beloved Hawkeyes. The duo created “Stavi Stacks,” went on card show adventures, and traveled all the way to the Dublin Card Show for Stavi’s 15th birthday; a tradition they now keep yearly.

But nothing could’ve prepared them for the moment they hit the card.

The Hit

It was a Sunday night. Derrick had a work trip the next morning, his wife was out to dinner, and he and Stavi decided to rip a box from Blowout Cards. The chase was clear: Caitlin Clark.

“We saw the shimmer, and Stavi knew right away; it was the Gold Vinyl,” Derrick said. “We sweated it, opened the rest of the box, and came back to it.”

As Stavi revealed the red, then the “C,” they both froze. It was the 1/1.

“I stopped recording. We carefully set the card down, and then we jumped around the room, hugged each other. Even my daughters came running downstairs.”

The Meaning Behind the Card

For Derrick, it was more than just a pull.

“I wanted to play for Iowa,” he said. “I played Division II ball at Chaminade in Hawaii and a year in Spain, but I was a Hawkeye through and through. My mom was a baller too—she played in 1974 on the first girls basketball team at Dubuque Senior.”

The Clark card represented generational pride, love of the game, and a connection to women's sports that runs deep in the family.

“This was our PC of all PC cards,” Derrick admitted. “But it’s just worth too much. With four kids, there’s a lot we can do with this.”

Choosing Alt

Derrick got to know Alt after selling a Jared McCain 1/1 Prism through the platform. The experience; fast cash advance, seamless marketing, and full transparency, made it an easy choice when deciding to list the Caitlin Clark Gold Vinyl.

“I was already working with the team and knew they’d do this card justice. They’ve been amazing throughout the whole process.”

Family, Fun, and the Future

Derrick’s favorite part? Watching his wife finally understand the world of cardboard.

“She used to look at me sideways when packages showed up. But now, she’s into it. She even helped weigh the decision to sell.”

And Stavi? Still ripping, still cool under pressure, and still Hot Hands Stavi in the family lore.

Looking ahead, Derrick’s not done collecting Caitlin Clark.

“I’ve got some other rookies. I might chase the rainbow. But owning that card—the one-of-one—it’s something I’ll never forget.”

Letting It Go, But Hoping It Grows

Derrick hopes the card finds a home with a passionate collector or someone who sees Caitlin Clark as more than a star athlete, but a symbol of what women’s sports can be.

“This isn’t just a women’s basketball card,” he said. “It’s great basketball. It’s a Steph Curry-level game-changer. The way she pulls up from deep; it’s electric.”

As bids come in, Derrick reflects on what it means to sell a card of this magnitude.

“I’m one of the few who’s held it raw. I’ve seen it shine. Now someone else gets to. And I hope it goes crazy.”
